Guilt, Duty, And Unrequited Love Essay Example For Students

Blame, Duty, And Unrequited Love Essay Blame, Duty, and Unrequited Love: Deconstructing the Love Triangles in James Joyces The Dead and Thomas Hardys Jude the Obscurequot; Its no issue of mine however its a difficult I battle, carrying on with an actual existence that I cannot desert. Yet, theres no sense in letting me know, the shrewdness of the unfeeling words that you express. Yet, that is the way that it goes and no one knows, while regular my disarray grows.;quot; New Order, Bizarre Love Triangle, from Substance, 1987Most individuals who have watched a drama can perceive that the adoration triangle is a vital component to the plot. Truth be told, the first radio communicated dramas appeared to comprise primarily of affection triangles. The adoration triangle, for plot purposes, is by all accounts a mainstream procedure utilized to change the dynamic, include measurement, and by and large flavor up an in any case stale monogamous relationship. It would make for a really dull and very disagreeable show if such well know n daytime cleanser characters as Luke and Laura or Bo and Hope had delighted in a smooth romance, simple marriage and afterward developed old and dark together without a solitary clash. The watchers watched them experience numerous contentions, some of which included the great love triangle. Such clashes as the affection triangle keep the story moving. Basic components of triangles in todays cleansers comprise of desire, avarice, envy, any of which are exchangeable with the contentions coming about because of circumstances including sweethearts resurrecting or paternity vulnerabilities. However love triangles, regardless of whether in the drama or in the novel, are not all consistently built. James Joyces The Dead and Thomas Hardys Jude the Obscure, both pioneer books, each contain love triangles as an essential component of the story. The key triangles I will concentrate on are contained Michael, Greta and Gabriel, and, Philotson, Sue, and Jude. In spite of the fact that not totall y indistinguishable, deconstruction uncovers blame, obligation, and pathetic love as fundamental parts to the development of both. #9;Besides the most evident closeness that the two triangles are made out of one lady and two men, coerce likewise figures unmistakably. Despite the fact that the men of the triangles may have their own blame related issues, it appears just as it is the blame felt by the ladies that presents the most clash. In The Dead, Greta needs to live with the information that it is a direct result of her, albeit by implication, that Michael passed on. All things considered, in view of this blame she stops on the flight of stairs to tune in to The Lass of Aughrim, a tune that, as she reveals to Gabriel later, helps her to remember Michael. At that point, her better half deciphers her demeanor on the flight of stairs as one of quot;grace and mysteryas on the off chance that she were an image of something.quot;(Joyce 2028). He was right, aside from not in the way that he thought. Right to the lodging, the waiting memory of that sight of her actuates his energy. Be that as it may, he encounters a h orrible irritated as Greta enlightens him regarding the melody and what it intends to her. This is the crucial point in time where Michael, or rather his memory, enters and finishes the triangle, despite the fact that he may have been there from the beginning without Gabriels information. To Gabriel, this new development illuminates his whole union with Greta as he quot;thought of how she who lay next to him had secured her heart for such huge numbers of years that picture of her sweethearts eyes when he revealed to her that he didn't wish to livequot;(Joyce 2035). He ponders quot;how poor a section he, her significant other, had played in her lifequot;(Joyce 2035). In spite of the fact that it is somewhat unconventional for one of the individuals from this odd love triangle to live past the grave, we see here that Michael assumes a critical job, maybe modifying Gabriel and Gretas relationship perpetually, with Gretas coerce as the inciting factor. #9;As for Sue, in Jude, her blame works on a totally extraordinary level, a strict one. Like Greta, Sue additionally had a wiped out man bite the dust in the wake of conquering the components just to see her. However, in contrast to The Dead, this occasion has no incredible effect on the affection triangle between Jude, Sue and Philotson. This three-cornered sentimental debacle, in light of Sues come back to Philotson, had just arrived at its peak. In the event that anything, Judes passing made Sues guarantee never to see him again simpler. But since Judes passing occurs toward the finish of novel, the peruser doesn't see whether this adds to or takes away from her blame. All we are told is that she is quot;tired and miserable, quot; quot;years and years older, quot; quot;quite a sullen worn woman, quot; and still completely repelled by Philotson (Hardy 431). Sues blame begins from cultural weights, and afterward surfaces after the passing of the kids. She realizes that moving in with Jude after her separation from Phi lotson is disapproved of, yet she doesn't have indistinguishable ethics and qualities from the general public in which she lived, therefore, doesn't anticipate any kind of discipline. She takes the appalling demise of her youngsters as an indication of perfect reprimand. quot;I see marriage contrastingly now!My babies have been taken from me to give me this!quot;(Hardy 369). Thusly, with the goal that their demises would not have been futile, Sue gets strict and comes back to Philotson, adding greater unpredictability to the triangle. Sues final words to Jude before he passes on are: quot;Dont follow medont take a gander at me. Leave me, for pitys sake!quot;(Hardy 412). This strange love triangle may not be made back the initial investment after Judes passing, for it is he whom she truly cherishes. For Philotson, Sue just feels a feeling of obligation. Brilliant Rice EssayThis might be the way Philotson felt when he found that his affection for Sue was so verifiably lonely. How harming it must be for a keeps an eye on inner self to find that his significant other would prefer to overcome resting in a storage room than with him. Philotson ponders wry, quot; What must a womans revultion be the point at which it is more grounded than her dread of spiders!quot;(Hardy 232). The poor man had typical desires for his marriage, just to find that the unimportant recommendation of closeness incited her jump what exactly could have been her passing. He discloses to his companion Gillingham, quot; She leaped out the windowso solid was her fear of me!quot;(Hardy 241). This is the last bit of excess that will be tolerated and Philotson awards her a separation. However, he isn't the just one to encounter solitary love. Jude does likewise, yet unquestionably not to such an extreme degree. In spite of the fact that, Sue adores Jude, she doesn't appear to cherish him enough to remain with him, at any rate not in the manner in which he cherishes her. He needs her as a spouse and she is substance to return to simply fellowship. quot;Well be cherished companions only a similar Jude, wont we?quot;(Hardy 374). She asks him, as though Jude could so effectively break up his sentimental affections for her. Sues just genuine romance have all the earmarks of being her own qualities and good urges, which appear to change with the tide all through the novel. #9;Love, with its capacity to make anguish or euphoria, is a trustworthy wellspring of dramatization, regardless of whether it be for the novel or the drama. As we find in Jude the Obscure and The Dead, the pressure of the adoration relationship is expanded with the expansion of an outsider. Jude and Sues relationship may probably have been very less difficult without the nearness of Philotson. He would not have been a possibility for Sues need to amend the demise of the kids. Truth be t old, she may have considered union with be Jude as the correct activity. They may have really gotten hitched and been upbeat. Be that as it may, for reasons unknown, Hardy didn't permit this to occur. Rather, he wanted to leave the peruser with the dull perspective on adoration, where there isn't generally a cheerful completion. With respect to Gabriel and Gretas relationship, if Greta had not recounted Michael, Gabriels night may have finished much in an unexpected way. He would in all probability have fulfilled his desire, yet the novel would come up short on the revelation Gretas admission makes him have. The segments of blame, obligation, and lonely love, however not all inclusive characteristics, do well to keep up the multifaceted nature and viability of these specific love triangles.

Research on Martin Luther King Jr And 8220The Lett Essay Example For Students

Research on Martin Luther King Jr And 8220The Lett Essay er from the Birmingham Jail8221 Research on Martin Luther King, Jr. What's more, The Letter from the Birmingham Jail To me, Martin Luther King, Jr. isn't a new name. His celebrated discourse Ive a fantasy is mostly chosen as our English content in China. Despite the fact that I realize he is notable for the solid and full of feeling words, Letter from Birmingham Jail despite everything gave me a profound impression. It is superbly sorted out in a sensible and astute game plan. Then again, the words are solid and loaded with genuine, amazing feeling. To completely comprehend this letter, having an essential foundation of Martin Luther King and the social condition around then is vital. Ruler was naturally introduced to a rich white collar class group of Atlanta in the year 1929. His dad and granddad were both well known dark clergymen. Ruler got decent training, and moved on from Boston University as a Doctor of Ethnology. In the year 1955, King drove the blacks of Montgomery, Alabama, in a blacklist against the transports, which treated dark individuals inconsistent as the white individuals. The transports were integrated in 1965. In the next years, King dedicated himself to the battle for equivalent social liberties, and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1968, King was killed. Letter from Birmingham Jail was written in 1963. It was a reaction to a distributed explanation by eight individual priests from Alabama (Lord 403) who thought Kings peacefulness obstruction was incautious and untimely(King, Martin Luther. Letter from Birmingham Jail. Throws of Thought: Writing In And Against Tradition. Eds. George Otte and Linda J. Palumbo New York: Macmillan1991, 403). Around then, the social equality development in the U. S. confronted a few issues and challenges, and was easing back down. Letter from Birmingham Jail lit the entire development up, and turned into a defining moment. In the wake of knowing the fundamental foundation, let us center around the letter itself. Toward the start of the letter, (from passage 1 to section 3) King effectively returns his latent situation as detainee to a bustling pioneer serve, who had brief period to react to analysis. In the primary section, he kept his affable tone, and offered the expression so that he was not compelled to answer yet ready to answer since he regarded those clergymens positive attitude and earnest. At that point, in the accompanying passages, he responds to the inquiry: Why is Martin Luther King is here in Birmingham? In this area, the words all the more essentially, besides show an intelligent association. He makes reference to his leader position in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, to show his duty of the circumstance of Birmingham. Here, he underscores the greeting and association binds to suggest that he ought to be regarded as a visitor. In the coming section, he contrasted himself as a pastor and those Christian holy people in the history to pick up trust and more regard. At that point he centers around the obligation of an individual and an American resident, who should demonstrate more worry to those shameful acts regardless of where they are. Here, he disproves the clergymens explanation about outcasts coming in by saying: Never again would we be able to stand to live with the thin, commonplace outside instigator idea(King 404). Before the finish of the primary segment of the letter, King has flawlessly got the trust and regard he merited as a man, a pastor, a social liberties pioneer, even a detainee. We can perceive how effectively and superbly that King changed the individual of composing from the single I to a plural structure we, so as to underscore hes not the only one. He increased a high regard and indicated a solid help simultaneously. The cautious and mindful structure is another fundamental character of the letter. From passage 4 to section 46, King discredits a few proclamations referenced in clergymens letter, and makes a solid and firm counterattack. The inquiries he answers include: 1) Why are the showings occurring in Birmingham? 2) Why do we take direct activities, rather than arrangement first? 4) Why would it be a good idea for us to demonstrate readiness to overstep laws? Among these influent and amazing answers, the words that discussion about violating laws show a great association and mix of distinguish and model, circumstances and logical results. .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 , .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .postImageUrl , .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .focused content territory { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 , .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2:hover , .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2:visited , .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2:active { border:0!important; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; haziness: 1; change: murkiness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2:active , .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2:hover { mistiness: 1; progress: obscurity 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relat ive; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content adornment: underline; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; fringe span: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe range: 3px; content adjust: focus; content design: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u02038629113c54e aa7815b3a09d5e4d2 .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u02038629113c54eaa7815b3a09d5e4d2:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: School Girls Essay In .

Pay for Essays and Get on with Your Life

Everyone who has ever ordered an essay or any other kind of academic assignment from a writing service knows that doing it, at least for the first time, requires a great deal of courage. The reason is simple you can never be sure about what you are getting, and just as easily you can pay for not a well-written essay, but a bunch of additional problems, sometimes by far exceeding the original ones. That is why we at ThePensters decided to create a writing service that would never keep the client in the dark. Is It Always a Good Idea to Pay Someone to Write Essay? How do usual writing companies work? You place an order, pay for an essay (e.g.) and then do nothing but wait, without any control whatsoever over how the agency deals with your assignment. Maybe they simply take the text from an online repository, or resell a piece of writing they have already given to half a dozen people, or maybe they will be looking for a writer in vain until the last moment and only then will say We werent able to find anyone to deal with your case. Sorry!, leaving you in a worse position than before you contacted them. Why Should You Pay for an Essay Here? Nothing of the sort will befall you if you deal with ThePensters. The main principle of our writing company is that we are not, frankly speaking, a writing company. We do not have a constant staff of writers and we dont assign our writer to this or that case on a whim. We give absolute freedom to both parties: clients can deal with whoever they want and the writers may charge whatever they want and place bids on whatever cases they like. As a result, our service is a free market economy all by itself, with people dealing with each other whenever and however they want. The client usually leaves a description of his assignment and waits for the writers to leave their bids. He then studies their profiles, estimates the feedback they got from their previous customers, reads samples of their works, evaluates the price/quality ratio and makes a choice, founding it only on his own understanding of what is more important. Why Our Way Is Better Because we dont hide anything from our clients. When you place an order with us it doesnt disappear out of your sight: you can control the entire process from A to Z. Select a writer meticulously yourself or delegate this decision to us; choose the most expensive or the most praised author; communicate with him throughout the process of writing or leave everything to him. Dont be afraid of the writer being not qualified enough to deal with your task or of receiving a plagiarized paper we are very careful about who we deal with and check every paper so that only the works of highest quality reach our customers. Dealing with ThePensters you really solve the problem without creating any new ones.

Building Societies An Integral Part Of Uk Financial...

Building societies are an integral part of UK financial services, offering mortgages and savings as their main products. The name ‘building society’ stems back to the late 1700s when the first society was formed. Small groups of people pooled their savings to buy land and build houses. The building societies are the greatest direct competitors to banks for personal customers. The Building Societies Association (BSA) is the trade association that represents all of the UK’s 52 building societies. A building society is a mutual organisation, which means it is collectively owned by its members. This means that members have the right to receive information, speak at meetings and vote at an annual general meeting (AGM) – in other words, they have a say in how the society operates. Every member has one vote. Each building society has a board of directors, who run the society on behalf of the members. Anyone who has a savings account or a mortgage with a building society is a member. Members deposit money into their accounts as savings and the society then uses a proportion of this money to offer mortgages to other members. Banks are limited companies. They are listed on the Stock Exchange and owned by shareholders. The banks’ shareholders expect to receive dividends, which are shares of the profits made. Banks therefore try to maximise their profits in the interests of their shareholders. Building societies operate in a very different way from banks. Students With Intellectual Disabilities ( Id ) - 1107 Words

During the interview process, I went over several questions pertaining to students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) in a classroom setting. I had interviewed Ms. Chisolm (Special Education Teacher) for the Jersey City Public Schools District, who works with students of multiple disabilities. Intelligence disabilities (ID) mean the mental capabilities of a child’s knowledge and skills. Intellectual disability can be developed during childbirth or before the age of eighteen. It is imperative for me to know, â€Å"What are the characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities? Ms. Chisolm explained that students with ID have certain limitations which are below- average intelligence level, lacking mental and physical and adaptive skills, and social skills. Actually, students with ID have difficult learning disabilities such as short-term memory, attention hyper- active deficit disorder, down- syndrome disorder and speech impairment. Children with ID have a lower IQ rate due to their disabilities. I asked Ms. Chisolm the appropriate methods used to determine the IEP goals for students. Ms. Chisolm stated â€Å"The IEP methods are annual statements that provide certain standards to address a child’s knowledge, mental and physical skills, and behaviors. The graphic novel Essay Example For Students

The graphic novel Essay Looking at both texts, compare the ways in which the writers use the stylistic features of their genres to convey their views about the treatment of women.  In life, our world is surrounded with media and various forms of text and literature. We use words, languages, and graphics to portray our emotions and beliefs. As an audience, we analyze texts in great detail and we compare text with other forms of text. The blog by Jennifer Romolimi and the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi have a strong connection with each other, and yet they both have their own unique point of views and styles. Romolimi has used a blog as the form to convey to readers her personal opinions towards the subject of the TV show Americas Next Top Model. A blog is a modern way to write your own public diary. With technology, people can write and publish their text freely online for others to view. In Romolimis blog, she has used modern language to persuade how the ATNM has degraded womens rights. As a blog, people can express themselves freely without the need to write properly. For example, Thing is, I understand that humiliation is part of the reality show game, my real problem is how the hosts are always espousing empowerment and female strength and then forcing the contestants into embarrassing scenarios far outside the realm of real-life modeling. In the formal writing, we wouldnt start a sentence with Thing is and we would probably insert a period in between the sentences. Therefore Romolimi has used colloquial language in her writing, which speaks to the younger age group that she wants to deliver the message to. In contrast of using colloquial language she has showed that she is an experienced writer though well organized sentence structure. She knows how to grab the readers attention. She first stepped into other peoples shoes and spoke from their point of view. Then she opposed her counter argument, which makes a strong statement. Her words were powerful and she has carefully selected her word choices. For example Suddenly everything that was once campy, offbeat, and fun, felt cheap, depressing, and a little embarrassing too. After reading her blog, the audience will think about the importance of these word choices and the way she has grouped these words in threes. This made the reader wonder about the meaning behind them. In Satrapis graphic novel Persepolis, the pictures along with the short phrases were very powerful to the readers. The adage A picture is worth a thousand words symbolizes Satrapis graphic novel. Not only did the colors of black and white has its own significant meaning, but the body language and the facial expressions have portray the message that the author wants to leave the reader with. The black and white represents the good and the evil events that were happening during the Islamic revolution. It also refers that the Islamic revolution was an unfavorable event. Especially womens rights were degraded throughout the revolution. Satrapi has used language and imagery to emphasis on the influence of veil. If we look closely, well be able to realize that the girls who are wearing the veil has lack of facial emotion, which refers to the lack of individuality and identity. Compare the title image and the first two frames, we can see the difference that the proper way of wearing a veil is to cover the entire head including hair. The girls in the first two frames have hair sticking of the veil, which gives the sense that they are on the verge of breaking the veil rule. Later Based on her personal experience, she has brought the audience into her childhood through her graphic novel.

The Hours Review Essay Example

The Hours Review Paper Essay on The Hours About these words (I, unfortunately, can not remember them verbatim) shocked me a few years ago, when I first saw the movie, based on the novel of Cunningham. The film The Hours, which I fell in love at first sight. I do not even remember how many times I watched it: 5-6 times, no less. Definitely I remember that many do not understand the first time, did not have time for time offset seams that are constantly taking place in the film. And it is absolutely unknown to me (and, therefore, not clear) was a line associated with Virginia Woolf. I had to read Mrs. Dalloway, what I do not regret. I was just shocked! Anything like this before, I did not read. The film, superimposed on the prose of Wolfe, of course, sounded completely different and completely fascinated me. And only a few years after this story I came upon the hero of the occasion -. Cunninghams novel The Hours » Honestly, I took him in hand with fear, very afraid to be disappointed. And generally I do not like to read the book after the film. What a sense for these reasons that I can not be objective in this novel, too many overlapping one to the other took place in my mind, I too firmly to fit in its cultural context. When reading The Hours is constantly before my eyes were the picture from the film, or was reminded of the scene from Wolfe. And I constantly compare Cunningham with her, although I understand that this is very different writers We will write a custom essay sample on The Hours Review specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on The Hours Review specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on The Hours Review specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer The novel did not disappoint me, though, and left some the turmoil in the soul. Influence of Virginia Woolf is very strong, but Cunningham is not something that does not try to hide it, on the contrary, he cares for her work, which nowadays is so rare! This is a novel about the hours of our lives that slowly, in many ways, but surely ticking all the same ending. We all will die. But we all love this life, we have all the time we hope for the best. And this is the whole point. Otherwise Otherwise the death, but the other, a terrible, untimely. Death (as in the novel several of its variants) really emphasizes is not that life itself, it flows and flows themselves, but the essence of this life, meaning, for which is (or should not) live. And death is (as it turns out) links in a single destiny of heroes node, widely separated in time and space from each other It has everything: a. The history of the unfortunate writer, in his crucial dilemma of to be or not to be , and the modern history of New Yorkers with their ups and downs, homosexuals and lesbians, with AIDS, which, however, does not take away from the entirely novel (I usually do not like such a heap of problems). For lovers of reflection on the consumer society (the period of its formation, more precisely) also has some interesting thoughts And this is a novel about a writers work, one that will redeem all.. Not by chance the two protagonists of the novel writers, one the reader, and another a very similar copy of a literary heroine In short, worthy of the novel: good language (more precisely, translation, probably), the unexpected development of the plot. philosophicity unobtrusive. Frankly, I was even hurt that this novel was so strange to me.

Make Way for New Words

Make Way for New Words Make Way for New Words Make Way for New Words By Mark Nichol The Oxford English Dictionary has an insatiable appetite for new entries: Every three months, it expands its inventory with dozens of words. A recent newspaper article, however, sensationalized recent acquisitions by selectively announcing a pile of pop-culture-inspired terms, missing the whole point of a dictionary. The OED, like most other dictionaries, is descriptivist: It describes the state of the language. Some descriptivist resources weigh in on the formality of given entries, or their acceptability by a panel of language experts. The procedure for approving candidate terms for inclusion varies, as dictionary staffs differ on how long a term should have been in general circulation before it earns the stamp of approval. But dictionaries do not include or omit words based on their quality. So, withhold your outrage when you read that you can now find such entries as bromance (a close friendship between two men), guyliner (eyeliner worn by a man), and mankini (a man’s one-piece bathing suit with shoulder straps). The apocalypse is not nigh. The OED is merely reflecting usage. (Well, OK, maybe the apocalypse is nigh.) But wait, you argue. You wouldn’t be caught uttering or penning one of those words, inducted into the OED in 2011. My rebuttal? I deduce that you are over twenty-five years old. Well, yes, you might reply as is a majority of the world’s English-reading population. That’s true, and many people born in the last twenty-five years would probably be embarrassed to employ one of these terms in conversation, too. But many folks of all ages know these words they’re in our word-hoard, whether we choose to speak or write them or not. And though some may turn out to be ephemeral, the OED has rightfully catalogued them as being in current usage. Here are a few terms added in the most recent round that I predict might have more staying power than those listed above: Cybercast: an online audiovisual broadcast Paywall: an online system that restricts access to those who pay a subscription Super PAC: a political action committee with restrictions on funding as long as specific political candidates are not the recipients In the What Took You So Long category are such terms as blacktop, a verb describing the process of paving a surface (the noun form already existed in the OED’s pages), earthlike (self-explanatory), and supertitle, the word for transcribed or translated text displayed above a stage or on a screen. In the Department of Redundancy Department category is bimble, a synonym (primarily used in British English) for amble or meander. But English is replete with multiple words with the same meaning, so bring it on. An honorable mention, for clever coinage, goes to aptronym, the word for a personal name usually humorously or ironically suited to the person, such as in the case of an undertaker named Grimm or a clumsy woman named Grace. Whether you love or hate each of these terms or the hundreds of others being poured into dictionaries each year, keep in mind that although inclusion does enhance the possibility that they will be used more often, the realm of English is a free country, and you are welcome to accept or reject them in your own writing. Ataraxia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Ataraxia - Essay Example It is a difficult state to attain in modern times, as it is almost impossible to be detached from the material world and gain access to philosophical state of mind. Hellenistic philosophy, also called philosophy of Plato recommended that man should be self-sufficient and self-dependent and should rely only on himself for happiness. It is important to find the right balance of mind, deed and outlook so that happiness is not beyond reach to attain ataraxia, imperturbability, which could also be termed as mere 'peace of mind'. "Ataraxia is a spiritual balance, the research of physical and psychical harmony so difficult to achieve by human beings. Ataraxia becomes a state of tension able to open our minds and be receptive towards life experiences" http://www.myspace.com/histrionia Epicurus gave a totally different meaning to ataraxia. This philosopher had given a lot of thought to death, its imminence and relevance in day-to-day life. He thought that without connection and thought of death, every day life takes a queer shape and hence, death is an inescapable truth and the ultimate aim. It is also a total blackout and hence not painful later, and we should avoid physical pain while being alive. And to live without being bothered by physical pain is the pleasure of life. "Since death is a total annihilation that cannot be experienced, in our present lives we need only live a simple life and seek always to avoid physical pain. It is pleasure, understood in this negative sense, that is the highest good for Epicurus. Freedom from mental disturbance. http://www.philosophypages.com/ph/epiu.htm EPICTETUS Epictetus stressed on basic good life of humans. According to him the good life itself is based on ataraxia and if one is conscious of it and controls his own life based on high values as a rational human being should do, he would live in complete happiness. He offered extensive arguments on complete and achievable happiness, based on his amazing understanding of life. "The eudaimonia ('happiness') of those who attain this ideal consists of ataraxia (imperturbability), apatheia (freedom from passion), eupatheiai ('good feelings'), and an awareness of, and capacity to attain, what counts as living as a rational being should. The key to transforming oneself into the Stoic sophos (wise person) is to learn what is 'in one's power', and this is 'the correct use of impressions' (phantasiai), which in outline involves not judging as good or bad anything that appears to one" http://www.iep.utm.edu/e/epictetu.htm He said people have to be motivated and inspired by virtue, act virtuously. According to him, life with right principles is the secret of attaining happiness. Total happiness cannot be achieved without a clear conscience and this cannot come without a guiltless life. Self-satisfaction and the feeling that the individual had taken every decision in life without selfishness, without any personal gain and with total ethical justice is the path that leads to a clear conscience and self-acceptance. He said this is the only way to attain imperturbability. DIOGENES Diogenes argued from an entirely diverse viewpoint. He said marriages should be made null and void and the family should become communal and the responsibility of community and State. He was so advanced for his time that he demanded patriotic citizenship and the citizenship of the world. Diogenes was considered to be

Persuading the Teacher to let me do my Research Paper on Prison Essay Example for Free

Persuading the Teacher to let me do my Research Paper on Prison Essay Abstract   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The United States is currently facing an overcrowding crisis in its prisons today. Increased rate of crime and the refusal by the relevant state authorities to expand the number of correctional facilities has put a strain to the existing prisons. This has been recently been revisited in the national forums with calls from the concerned stakeholders to address the situation before it gets out of hand. Overcrowding according to prison authorities has reached peak levels to an extent that inmates are forced to share cells. The negative impacts of overcrowding are known and they include aggression and a higher likelihood of disease spreading (Paulus, P et al 112).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This situation needs to be arrested. There exist many strategies on the table that can be used to curb overcrowding. These would range from building new facilities, alternative correctional methods and proper designs of the correctional facilities. (www.johnhoward.ab.ca). The purpose of this short essay is to apply all the persuasive and writing schools acquired, use them to convince my instructor on why I should be allowed to tackle the above topic.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In this paper, I shall look at the resources that are they’re touching on this topic, and use them to present a solid case and position regarding the topic. This all is meant to prove to my instructor that this is a topic worthy tackling and that I am the right person. The possible thesis statement for the essay will be: The federal government should allocate adequate resources to alleviate the problem of overcrowding in our prisons. This thesis statement emanates form a personal belief and strong conviction that the situation as it stands in our prisons breeds more problem that it seeks to solve. The government has a key duty to provide essential services to all the citizens of this nation in spite of the status in life. The inmates are no lesser human beings than us ad deserve all the resources possible to make their stay in prison meaningful.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There are two very specific reasons that have aroused my intense interest of covering this specific topic. The first is my background and secondly is my interest in championing for human rights. Having been born and bred in a crime prone environment I have a first hand experience with criminals and a better understanding of why people indulge in crime. The political, social and economical factors that can lead to crime. The prisons are supposed to be correctional facilities and not to excessively punish and waste the potentials possessed by the inmates.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In writing this research paper I intend to utilize a large number of resources. The Internet and the library will provide a good source of information on overcrowding. Goggle scholar for example has lots of articles covering this topic. For example an article by Anne Bolduc â€Å"our crowded prisons† provides useful insights (Pg 45-57). From the library, a book by Stephen D, et al (America’s correctional crisis, Pg 12-56) focuses on the topic. There will be supplemented by other journal articles and materials from the web. This is an interesting topic and I plan to invest a lot of my time to expound more on the existing information. Mathematics Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Mathematics In an attempt to express certain basic concepts of mathematics precisely, one should consider a handful of different accepted and developed conceptions. Pythagoras, in the Fifth Century B.C., believed that the ultimate elements of reality were numbers; therefore the explanation for the existence of any object could only be explained in number. Gottlob Frege stated, in an idea referred to as logicism, that mathematics could in some sense be reduced to logic. The views of Plato state that we "know" these rules of mathematics at the intuitive level rather than the conscious level. Plato also believed that these forms existed previously in their perfect forms; humans know them in their imperfect forms through concept and imagination. Humans did not invent mathematics, but rediscovered these transcendent but real forms. Almost a century ago, Bertrand Russell wrote in The Problems of Philosophy that "philosophy should not be studied 'for the sake of definite answers to its questions, since no definite answers can, as a rule, be known to be true.'" For the problems mentioned here, however, it seems possible to give and justify answers. Certainly the effort should be made. Perhaps, through Pythagorean ideas, logicism and Platonism, a firmer understanding can be known of the grasp that mathematics has on the world. Due to the secrecy of the society in which Pythagoras, it is difficult to distinguish between any original works of Pythagoras from those of his followers. However, it is not the author that is important, but rather the notions presented. According to the view of the Pythagoreans that "all is number," the first four numbers have a special significance in that their sum accounts for all possible... ...l proofs for someone who accepts the axioms from which they begin." Those axioms are continually being challenged, but if they are to be justified, it shall not be within the context of mathematical activities. Now we must turn to the philosophy of mathematics, "to the great debates between the formalists, the intuitionists, and the Platonists." These debates cannot be settled by mathematical proofs, however. The certainty of mathematics is merely conditional; it rests upon assumptions that cannot be proven within mathematics, but only within the philosophy of mathematics. Exactly the same problem applies with respect to the primary problems of philosophy. We can easily give practical arguments that seem very convincing, but when we analyze these arguments philosophically, we often find that the simple conventions of ordinary argument cannot be regarded as adequate.

Essay on Increase Cost of Living

India vs. UAE Living in India as compared to staying around the world you need to adapt to the surrounding atmosphere. Similarly I have been living in Sharjah since a while however I have lived my whole life in India. Although these two countries are far apart, very few factors such as education system and the culture between the two countries. There are a lot of difference between the Indian and the UAE education system. In India the schools mainly follow CBSE system, similarly in the UAE most of the schools follow the same system. On the other hand there are many schools and colleges that follow the IGCSE system.I have studied in a school where the school follows CBSE board. The main difference between the two of them is CBSE is much harder than the IGCSE board. The portion that CBSE covers in high school is what the IGCSE students study in collage. I had a major advantage on it because I did the CBSE board. The students who study IGCSE mainly study the Cambridge portion. In India, some schools don’t even have textbooks to study from, and still people study and get amazing grades. This is because the people in India struggle to study. That’s why there is a lot of completion as compared to the UAE.In India the education system is progressing at a slow rate. In India schools don’t use the latest technology to teach the students and are still teach on the board and chalk method. In UAE almost all the schools have computers and smart boards, which make studying much more easier and fun. The fees structure in a normal collage in India is very high as compared to the fees structure in any university in the UAE. The cultural diversity in India is very huge. In UAE it is less. The parents in India are very conservative when it comes to children. if it is a girl then they will be more protective because of the security of the girl.Parents do not allow the girl to leave the house for more until late in the night. On the other hand if it were a guy then they would have not cared much. This because of when it comes to the girl, the security of hers becomes important, as she could be raped or kidnapped or anything else can happen. Whereas in the UAE this is not the case because they know wherever their children are they will reach home safely, because of the laws. According to my personal experience the mentality of an Indian parent should change and they should leave their children free to live their lives. In India people eat with their hands. The men sitting first, to eat together in one huge plate. On the contrary, in UAE people eat by sitting on the table and in different plates and sit around the dining table. In India the women don’t sit together for food with the men. When I was a young kid I use to sit on the floor and eat food with my dad and my cousin brother. Back then I use to think why eat by sitting on the floor. As I grew up I realized that it is an Indian culture and tradition to sit down and eat. The man has the last say in any important decision. Whereas in UAE, when a decision is made by asking the opinion of all the members. In conclusion in the many years to come I would like to see India catching up with the UAE. To make a country better than the others countries, Education and cultural diversities of the country plays a major role. There are many colleges in India that have been recognized internationally. The Indian education system will come up in the coming years, as the IT sector in India is booming. This will be a turning point to them as they can make some better technology better than the other countries, whereas in the UAE, technology has played an important role and which has helped them to make education much easier and more interesting to people.
